What is counselling?

Counselling is an opportunity to talk about your feelings and reactions with someone who is separate from your everyday life. It is somewhere to explore issues (past or present) that may be affecting you emotionally.

What our Counselling Service can offer:

A structured time and place to talk with a counsellor, one to one.
Regular weekly appointments of approximately one hour at our premises in Newport.
Professional, confidential support from a counsellor with a special interest in working with older people.
An understanding that counselling may be a new and unusual option for our clients.

Cost

Counselling sessions are provided free to our clients. Some clients may choose to make a contribution towards the cost of the service by way of a donation to Age Concern Isle of Wight.

What to do next?

Please contact us at Age Concern Isle of Wight and ask to arrange a counselling appointment. Appointments are subject to availability. Appointments are weekly and the total number of sessions varies from person to person. If you are reading this with someone else in mind, please encourage them to contact us themselves.

Counselling for Age Concern Isle of Wight is provided by a trained volunteer counsellor, working within the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy Ethical Practice and under professional supervision.

At Age Concern Isle of Wight we understand the importance of constructing a safe and trusting environment for our clients, as counselling can sometimes be quite a challenging experience. With this in mind, counselling is offered on a confidential basis. This means that the personal information you discuss remains private within the counselling service.

Sometimes there are exceptions when the support of other professionals is needed, for example when a counsellor is concerned for someone’s safety or is required to do so by law. The counsellor would, wherever possible, first discuss this with their client.
